Location Location Location

A key piece of infrastructure On Site brings is our multiple locations. While we are headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, we have three other branches in Minnesota and one in St. Louis, Missouri. With our branches in southern Minnesota (Rochester and Mankato) and our branch in Duluth, we are able to cover the entirety of the state. When you add in St. Louis, we have a large area of coverage in the Midwest.

What does our geography mean for our customers? For our construction customers, it means if you’ve worked with On Site in one area, you can bring us with you when start a new project, keeping the equipment and service standards you’re accustomed to.

It also means we have a pipeline to easily move equipment around to make sure we always have what our customers need when and where they need it.

Inventory Managed

The next investment On Site has made over the years is in our inventory. Our inventory is diverse in the type of units we have as well as vast in the quantity of units. This is a fact for not just our sanitation services, but for climate control as well.

For our temporary restroom customers, we have different porta potty units for our special events customers than our industrial clients. Not all porta potty providers can make that claim. There are companies that if you rent a unit for your wedding or graduation party, that same unit may have been out on a construction site. While we keep all of our units in superior repair, the truth is industrial-use units will have more wear and tear over time. When you’re having your event, you want everything to be perfect, including your porta potty.

The porta potties we stock for our industrial customers also come in several varieties to make sure they fit the project. High Tech

You wouldn’t think there could be a technological difference in the temporary sanitation and climate control worlds, but there is. We’ve actually written about this before, but here’s the short version.

On Site companies utilizes a software platform that allows all of our orders, routing, dispatch, and technicians to be constantly synced. All our drivers have iPads in their trucks. The iPads aren’t just GPS, but also are connected to the same software server as dispatch, routing, and order entry. This allows constant communication not just over phones, but actual data such as order details to be constantly updated on all sides. This enables not only our office team to make sure drivers and technicians have the latest information for delivery and service, but our field team can likewise communicate back any issues they encounter. You wouldn’t be doing your project if it wasn’t important. There is a desire or even a need for anyone contributing to your project to take it seriously enough to work hard and respect the deadline.

Urgent or Fast?

The phrase “sense of urgency” is bandied about frequently in our busy world. Many people use it interchangeably with “as fast as possible.” But “fast” is not equal to “urgent.” After all, there are three ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way, and the Max Power way. It’s the wrong way, but much faster.

When you want a sense of urgency, you don’t want things to be done fast just for the sake of doing them fast. A sense of urgency is greater than that. A sense of urgency means doing things with the seriousness and respect they deserve in a timely fashion. It does not mean getting things done as fast as possible by any means necessary. A sense of urgency does mean having an understanding of the situation and what is required to solve the problems presented. It also means people who are actively engaged in solving the problems and completing the tasks.

The operative word in “sense of urgency” is “sense.” It is something that we don’t just take in intellectually, but we internalize the need for urgency. We feel it. Humans are emotional beings that function on emotions, both positively and negatively. When we have a sense of urgency about something, there is an emotional connection that drives us to accomplish the task.

30 Years of On Site Companies

This December, On Site Companies is excited to celebrate its 30th anniversary. In the past three decades, On Site has grown from a simple mom and pop business for porta potty rental in Minnesota to a company with more than one hundred employees over five branches and multiple services.

The Early Years

On Site Companies was founded by Dave and Karen Holm in 1989 with truly humble beginnings. It was started with “a truck and a cellphone.” That truck was a used one at that, driven to Minnesota from Ohio. “Dave flew out to get the truck,” says Dave’s daughter, Molly. “He only took a toolbox with him. The truck broke down on the way to Minnesota, so it’s a good thing he had the tools.”

In the early years, Dave was salesman, operations manager, and technician. Dave would take the call, drive the truck, place and service units, and handle all customer service. His wife, Karen, would come home from her fulltime job to do the bookkeeping at night. Dave and Karen’s children, Molly and Russ, were “cheap child labor” in the summers, assembling porta potties. Russ and Molly would also go out in the truck with Dave on calls on days off from school.

Dave worked longed hours in those days, but always had his eye on the future. “I remember when we got our first computer,” reminisces Russ. “We didn’t know exactly what we were going to use it for, but we knew it was going to be important if we wanted to grow.”

Growth Spurt

Growth was always the goal, and growth did come in the early days. It wasn’t long before On Site Sanitation (as it was called then) added its first official employees both in the field and in the office. From there, the growth continued, with more team members to help with routes and deliveries.

30 Years of On Site Companies

The next big landmark came in 1993 with the acquisition of the current headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. “It was essentially three people in this big building,” remembers Russ. “Everything was in an enclosed office [on the west end of the building] and everything else was essentially empty. It was projected growth.”

“Our grandfather was instrumental to buying this building,” recalls Molly. Indeed, today there is a plaque commemorating Alan Holm at On Site’s headquarters.

Another milestone in the 90s was the addition of climate control equipment rental to On Site’s services. It came about as a way to continue to grow the business by adding more services that complimented the sanitation side of the business. On Site was now truly more than porta potty rental in Minnesota.

Branching Out

While On Site Companies started in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, they would soon expand, opening branch offices. St. Louis, the oldest of the branches, celebrated its own fifteen year anniversary in 2019.

Beyond St. Louis, On Site Companies now has branches in Rochester and Mankato, Minnesota. And, as of October, 2019, On Site is excited to have expanded its services to the Duluth, Minnesota area. All of On Site’s branches offer the same On Site services and maintain its high standard of professional service, utilizing our efficient routing and technology to make sure what you get at a branch is the same thing you would get at our main office.

On Site and The PSAI

On Site has been a long-time member of the Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI). Karen Holm served as president of the PSAI for two non-consecutive terms. On Site has always endeavored to exemplify the standards of the PSAI. “We want to elevate our industry,” says Molly. The professional standards of On Site mesh perfectly with those of the PSAI and On Site is proud to continue to contribute to the growth of the sanitation industry.

Today and Tomorrow

In early 2019, Dave and Karen Holm’s children, Russ and Molly, officially took ownership of On Site Companies. Both Molly and Russ worked for On Site since the beginning, working their way up in the company. As a teenager, Russ would help on routes and service. When climate control equipment was added, Russ learned how to be a heat technician. Molly too started at “the bottom,” working in the office in various roles. “In my eyes, I’ve always had a stake in On Site,” says Russ. “I’ve always taken ‘ownership.’”

One thing both Russ and Molly want to credit for the success of On Site is the hard work and dedication of all the staff over the past thirty years. “It takes a team,” says Russ. “The way we’ve grown is thanks to others.”

Celebrating World Toilet Day

 November 19th is World Toilet Day. Chances are, if you’re reading this, you don’t think much about your toilet. It’s something you and everyone you in your family uses multiple times a day. It’s a source of occasional humor, especially with young children. Most people reading this just don’t think about their toilet unless something goes wrong with it. Or, most people reading this don’t think about toilets until they need one and don’t have one.

Now imagine that situation was your normal. Imagine in your daily life, not knowing for sure you had a toilet when you needed one. Yet, more than half of the world’s population live as that as their daily norm. World Toilet Day works to both raise awareness of this issue while working to solve it.

Safe Sanitation

What does it mean to have safe sanitation? Like many things, safety exists on a spectrum, so there are many different ways people are experiencing unsafe sanitation. It can mean having to practice open defecation or not having basic handwashing stations, to everything in between.

Safe sanitation means people use hygienic toilet facilities that are not share with other households with the waste separated from human contact and safely disposed of.

This means, in a practical way, that there are humans who don’t have a private place to go. It means their waste is not being safely disposed of. The waste is contaminating the environment where these people live. Their water supply they use for bathing and drinking is contaminated with human waste every day.

That contamination means the spread of disease for billions of people. More than 4.2 billion people do not have safe sanitation. There are currently a little more than 7 billion people on Earth, so this means more than half our planet does not have clean and sanitary living environments.

Every year, this contamination causes more than 400,000 diarrheal deaths. Beyond that, the fecal-infested water is a leading cause of intestinal worms and trachoma. Other diseases that are spread with fecal contact include hand, foot and mouth disease, hepatitis A, viral meningitis, and salmonella.

Quick Guide To Ground Heat

A common misconception surrounding construction work is that it is a warm weather only event. In truth, there is a lot of work that can be done when the temperatures drop below freezing. And, if you add in temporary heating and ground heating, you can keep all the work going.

It’s true that frozen ground can be a serious impediment to building projects. It seems a basic law of physics, as things get colder they move slower, affects not just molecules but humans as well. As the ground freezes (ie: the molecules move slower) work can slow down too. There is an easy solution to both those problems, though. Ground heat equipment can keep your project (and team) moving.

How Ground Heat Works

Ground heat, or ground thaw if you prefer, is a fairly simple concept. Where other methods for heating areas may rely on tents, ground thaw relies on warmed liquid circulating through temporary hoses or pipes that cover an area of ground. The water is heated by a hyrdonic ground heater and pumped through the hoses.

These heaters are usually fueled by diesel. Typically, their fluid tank capacity can range from 50 gallons to more than 200 gallons. The more fluid a heater is able to hold, the more area it can heat.

The ground heater can also be used with ground thaw blankets. These “blankets” are quite different from what you have on your bed, though. They are massive tarp-like insulated sheets that can be spread over large areas. These blankets help keep the heat radiating from the hoses close to the ground, making the process far more efficient.

Ground Thaw Uses

Ground heat has a variety of uses and applications. The obvious use is for construction. With ground thaw, you can thaw the ground and keep working. There is also the advantage with ground heat being able to protect footings from frost heaving.

Ground thaw can also be used to help concrete curing. With heaters, you can achieve your required strength gain sooner by controlling the temperature. Because it is a dry heat, these heaters can help your project with avoiding water damage as well.

Beyond construction, other industries can make use of ground thaw equipment. Landscapers can get a jump start on their work with ground heaters. For agriculturists or horticulturists, ground heat can help keep plants alive for longer harvest in the fall. In the spring, plants can start their growing season on time no matter what the weather is doing with strategic ground heat.

What Type of Temp Heat Is Best For Me?

When the cold temperatures come, your work doesn’t have to stop. There are a lot of ways you can continue your project with temporary heat that won’t just keep your workers warm, but also can keep concrete curing in an efficient way.

Two Heaters Enter, One Heater Leaves

For temporarily heating your workspace, you have two choices; direct fired or indirect fired heaters. Both types of heaters have their advantages and disadvantages that make them more or less appropriate for different projects.

The Direct (Fired) Approach

Direct fired heaters are very similar to a gas grill or stove. Essentially, the fuel is burned to provide heat. Air is directly forced through the flame directly to heat the air. Since the fuel is burned directly to heat the air, direct fired heaters are the most energy efficient choice.

Direct fired heaters are mechanically very simple devices and are easy to transport. Their high energy efficiency makes direct fired heaters very powerful, able to generate higher amounts of BTUS compared to similarly-sized indirect fired heaters.

Of course, nothing is perfect, and direct fired heaters have their own drawbacks as well. Direct fired heaters have strict ventilation requirements for use. Ventilation is important because direct fired heaters produce carbon monoxide as a byproduct of creating heat. Those same carbon byproducts can also mean a direct fired heater may not be allowed in some buildings or job sites. The carbon monoxide from direct fired heaters requires a minimum of 20% outside air to be introduced to the space. If you need to bring in outside air, you may also need air moving equipment.

Indirect Fired

Indirect fired heaters are most similar to how a furnace works in your home. A flame in a burn chamber warms a heat exchanger. The heater draws in cool air in two different chambers. The air passes over and around the heat exchanger to get warm. The main advantage of this system is the air warmed and discharged is clean and free of carbon dioxide. Since indirect fired heaters do not release carbon dioxide, they can be used in smaller spaces. Indirect fired heaters also have the advantage of having a thermostat.

The disadvantages to an indirect fired heater is it is less efficient than a direct fired heater. Fuel efficiency for an indirect fired heater is close to 80%. Indirect fired heaters also always require exhaust ventilation. The exhaust can be vented outside or you can duct the hot air to the inside. Indirect fired heaters also are larger than direct fired units, making them far less portable.

Which Should I Use?

It may not be easy for you to choose which type of heater is best for you. Usually, direct fired heaters are best for outdoor applications and sites and interior or tightly-sealed workspaces are best for indirect fired heaters. Direct fired heaters are also good for areas with limited insulation or areas that need large volumes of warm air. Indirect fired heaters are good for areas that have strict sanitation requirements such as healthcare facilities or food processing plants.

On Site Companies is proud to be a member of the Portable Sanitation Association International. On Site Companies has been a member of the PSAI nearly all of its 30 years. As a member of the PSAI, we hold to the highest standards. But, what is the Portable Sanitation Association International?

What is the PSAI

The mission of the PSAI is “is a world in which clean and safe sanitation is accessible to all.” Beyond that, the Portable Sanitation Association International also serves as the authority within the sanitation industry. It strives to increase the understanding of the role portable sanitation plays in public health. It also works to expand and improve portable sanitation facilities. Finally, the PSAI works to assist its members in building successful businesses.

The PSAI was founded in 1971, in Bloomington, MN. The first PSAI meeting was held that year in New Orleans. The first board of directors was formed with nine members from various companies in the industry. Board members are either portable restroom operators or suppliers whose companies are current members of the Portable Sanitation Association International. Today, the PSAI board of directors meets four times a year, as well as has conference calls as needed.

The PSAI in Action

Today, the Portable Sanitation Association International  is known for its set of standards that all members must adhere to. The Code of Excellence was formally adopted by the PSAI board of directors in May 2015. The Code of Excellence contains six parts; Excellence in Our Actions, Excellence in Our Reputation, Excellence in Our Relationships, Excellence in Our Operations, Excellence in Our Environment, and Excellence Acknowledgment.

Excellence in Action is about ethically conducting business and taking seriously our responsibilities to customers, employees, and the world. The Excellence in Reputation piece means maintaining certified and qualified personnel, providing clean portable restrooms, and listening to customer needs.  The next part, Excellence in Our Relationships, promotes treating everyone with respect, equal opportunity, and fair business practices with respect to competitors. Excellence in Our Operations refers to professionalism with equipment and keeping records. Then, there’s Excellence in Our Environment, which is about a commitment to health and safety as well as proper disposal of waste and protecting the environment. Finally, the Excellence Acknowledgement is a signed document stating the commitment to the PSAI Code of Excellence.

Beyond the Code of Excellence, the Portable Sanitation Association International also certifies portable sanitation professionals who perform to the standards of the PSAI. At On Site Companies, all but our newest technicians who have been on our team for less than a year are PSAI certified.

It’s a breath-taking morning on your job site or your special event. The sun is shining and it promises to be the perfect day. As you inhale a deep breath of fresh air, that’s when it hits you; the air isn’t all that fresh. Oh no… your porta potties weren’t serviced.

You look at your porta potties, trying to figure out why they weren’t serviced as you dial. That’s when you notice your row of units are behind a row of parked cars. Or your hook units are still up on the third floor of your project. Or you realize your gate was locked until five minutes ago when you arrive. No matter how you slice it, the service technician couldn’t reach your porta potties and couldn’t clean them.

What Happens During Porta Potty Service

 When On Site services your temporary restroom, our technician does a few different things. First, they empty out the unit of its current waste contents, putting in new fresh blue liquid. From there, the technician cleans the inside of the unit, and makes sure the toilet paper is stocked. The internal hand sanitizing pump is checked as well, making sure it is full and functioning. The unit is also inspected for any damage on the inside and outside.

How To Prep My Units for Service 

To ensure you get efficient and timely service for your units, here is a handy checklist to make sure your porta potty is ready for service.

  • The service truck can park within 20 feet of the unit to be serviced.
  • The unit is not locked.
  • The unit is not behind a locked gate or secured area.
  • Our technicians have been granted any required security clearance to enter the area.
  • No one is parked in a manner that blocks the unit or makes it so a truck cannot park within 20 feet.
  • There are no other items (machinery, debris, etc.) blocking the unit or the space within 20 feet of the unit for the truck to park.
  • We have been notified if the unit has been moved to a different location on the site.
  • We have been notified if the unit has been moved to a different site / address.
  • If we are servicing a hook unit, the unit has been lowered back to the ground and the truck is able to park within 20 feet of the unit.
  • In the winter, snow removable has not blocked the unit or the path to the unit so the truck can still park within 20 feet.
